Climate Corps

Applied research and analysis

The New Jersey Climate Change Resource Center Climate Corps is a cohort of outstanding graduate students supporting the Center’s applied research, analysis, and program work. One key facet of Corps members is providing assistance to New Jersey municipalities in assessing hazards from changing climate conditions. Participating students include those in graduate programs in natural sciences, engineering, community planning, and public policy, including fellows in the Rutgers Coastal Climate Risk and Resilience (C2R2) program.

The Climate Corps develops and applies protocols linked to data within Rutgers’ web-based decision support tools to provide municipalities direct technical assistance with hazard mitigation planning; flooding vulnerability; climate resilience planning; Plan Endorsement as per the New Jersey Office of Planning Advocacy resilience guidelines; and the 2021 statutory requirement that the land use plan element of a municipal master plan include a climate-change-related hazard vulnerability assessment.

Climate Corps projects have also included:

  • Support to the New Jersey Blue Acres Program to develop a methodology to inform equitable buyout policies;
  • Direct technical assistance to municipalities undergoing the State Planning Commission Plan Endorsement Process;
  • Direct technical assistance to municipalities examining flooding vulnerabilities and hazards;
  • Evaluation of opportunities to integrate indicators of equity into Rutgers web-based decision support tools; and
  • Educational and communication materials including Story Maps regarding flood hazards facing affordable housing, historic and cultural assets, and healthcare facilities in New Jersey.
  • Research and analysis in support of the CCRC’s State of the Climate report.

Meet the Climate Corps

Joseph MarraJoseph Marra
I received my BA in political science with minors in urban planning and history from Rutgers University in 2023. I’m currently a second year MCRP student with a concentration in transportation planning at the Bloustein School. I most recently interned at NJTransit in the GIS department working in a small team to reconcile and map NJTransit’s real estate holdings. Between completing my undergraduate degree and beginning graduate school, I spent a year teaching English at a high school just outside of Milan, Italy.

I am in my second year of earning a master’s degree in City and Regional Planning at the Edward J. Bloustein School for Planning and Public Policy. My concentration is in transportation, because I am interested in how transportation intersects with the environment and the urban form. I hold a BA in Environmental Design, Policy, and Planning from Stony Brook University.

Ria SarkarRia Sarkar
I am a graduate student in the Earth & Planetary Science Department. My research focuses on understanding the relationship between North Atlantic ocean currents and past climate events since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Apart from research, I am the museum coordinator for the Rutgers University Geology Museum, where I can share my love of science with the general public through various outreach activities.

Megan Sweeney, Rutgers Climate CorpsMegan Sweeney
I am a second year master’s student in the Atmospheric Science program in the Department of Environmental Science. Currently, I am working on my master’s paper on the changes in snowfall in a warming climate system. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in operational weather forecasting, building on my background in climate and atmospheric science.
